bewitch yourself is a virtual and interactive opera offering a crip ritual for resourcing ourselves and sharing our resources. it is shaped by songspells, a term i coined to describe intentions holding space for dream possibilities that manifest transformation as we listen deeply to ourselves. a songspell is a seed of self-care. its magic blooms from the truth that what we give our attention to grows.
together, you and i will co-craft a songspell to bewitch yourself to. we’ll meet virtually. we’ll talk about what support we’d like to call in to ourselves. an oracle reading with my self-published sacrosanct oracle//composition deck will share a resource to rely on and serve as a graphic score. our intentions will become the libretto. i will cast our songspell with my voice, an orchestra of toy instruments to rival a playpen, and live electronic processing in MaxMSP. join me in the songspell casting, if you feel so called, with any mechanism for generating sound and a connection to experimentation and play.
an audio recording of our songspell and a document with our libretto will be yours to keep after our performance. no formal musical experience needed.
this intimate online crip ritual is an offering of access and transformative care, particularly for disabled folx at high-risk for covid-19. bewitch yourself is a love note to the brilliance and kinship of disabled community, a love note deconstructing the ableist messaging that says our disabled body-minds are disposable, a love note promising we won’t leave each other behind.
for me, bewitch yourself is a survival mechanism and a lifeline as we co-create space for being in community while in bed, for prioritizing access intimacy, for knowing belonging, and to be held in mutual support without putting ourselves or anyone else at risk. this care work honors our interdependence and serves as potent resistance against the deeply racist, ableist, money and death hungry systems of power and oppression that do not care for us or keep us safe.
as a sick mad crip, i am dedicated to the accessibility of my projects and gatherings as a critical step towards creating radical inclusivity in our community.
